Answers to Missionary Proofs from the Book of Jeremiah

Return to Answers to Missionary Proofs

Jesus was a descendant of David.

Prophecy:
Jeremiah 23:5-8: (5) Behold, days are coming, says the Lord, when I will set up of David a righteous shoot, and he shall reign a king and prosper, and he shall perform judgment and righteousness in the land. (6) In his days, Judah shall be saved and Israel shall dwell safely, and this is his name that he shall be called, The Lord is our righteousness. (7) Therefore, behold days are coming, says the Lord, when they shall no longer say, "As the Lord lives, Who brought up the children of Israel from the land of Egypt," (8) But, "As the Lord lives, Who brought up and Who brought the seed of the house of Israel from the northland and from all the lands where I have driven them, and they shall dwell on their land."

Proof:
Matthew 1:1,6 (1) The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham: ... (6) and Jesse begot David the king. David the king begot Solomon by her [who had been the wife] of Uriah.

Jesus does not come from the line of David since Joseph is not the biological father of Jesus.

If one believes that Jesus was born of a virgin then he had no tribal lineage since (1) G-d is not of any tribe and (2) the tribal lineage is passed on exclusively through the biological father.

Numbers 1:18: ...and they assembled all the congregation on the first day of the second month, and they declared their pedigrees according to their families according to their fathers' houses; according to the number of names, a head count of every male from twenty years old and upward.

Numbers 36:7: Thus, the inheritance of the children of Israel will not be transferred from tribe to tribe, for each person from the children of Israel will remain attached to the inheritance of his father's tribe.

There will be a new set of laws, a new contract, with man.

Prophecy:
Jeremiah 31:30: Behold, days are coming, says the Lord, and I will form a covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, a new covenant.

Proof:
The "New Testament" is called the "Brit Chadasha" which is Hebrew for "new covenant".

The “new” covenant is described beginning in verse 32. The covenant that Christianity speaks about is nowhere to be found within this description.

Jeremiah 31:32: For this is the covenant that I will form with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will place My law in their midst and I will inscribe it upon their hearts, and I will be their God and they shall be My people.

There are two Messianic prophecies attached to this "new" covenant that have yet to be fulfilled.

Jeremiah 31:33: And no longer shall one teach his neighbor or [shall] one [teach] his brother, saying, "Know the Lord," for they shall all know Me from their smallest to their greatest, says the Lord, for I will forgive their iniquity and their sin I will no longer remember.

Jeremiah 31:37-39: (37) Behold days are coming, says the Lord, and the city shall be built to the Lord, from the tower of Hananel until the gate of the corner. (38) And the measuring line shall go out further opposite it upon the hill of Gareb, and it shall turn to Goah. (39) And the whole valley of the dead bodies and the ash and all the fields until the Kidron Valley, until the corner of the Horse Gate to the east, shall be holy to the Lord; it shall never again be uprooted or torn down forever.
